Approval

The approval requires the presentation of a mare or stallion at the age of 3. It is the second step after the inspection and registration as a foal. Mares are being approved for a Mare Book, stallions will receive a Certified or a Lifetime Breeding License. Mares or stallions can get approved by more than one Breed Registry: e.g. a Hanoverian mare with Hanoverian registration paper can get approved by ISR Oldenburg N. A. for any of the Mare Books. Mares and stallions can be approved by several Registries, whereas they are only allowed to be registered with one Registry.

Breeding Certificate (BC)

For all foals, yearlings and older horses you’ll bring to an inspection for registration you must bring along the original Breeding Certificate issued, signed and mailed to you by the stallion owner. Please make sure that all breeding dates have been entered to the BC and your vet has signed it as well. A "BC" is not required for mares which already have registration papers when they come for mare book approval to an inspection.

Breeding Permit

A Breeding Permit can be granted by the stallion commission for a stallion which is not on the list of approved stallions published in the current online Stallion Directory. The stallion must be of superior quality and must have shown outstanding performance or outstanding Stallion-Test results.
Breeders shall apply for a Breeding Permit before they use such stallion for breeding.
Breeding Permits are issued for one breeding (one mare) only. The registry will email a permit which must be brought to the inspection.

These foals must also be DNA typed (see below under LOPV)

Breeding Report (BR)

Stallions owners get a Breeding Report Form from the Registry every spring. Such form must be completed for every stallion showing all mares bred during the season. The BR form must be returned to the Registry before the end of each year (Dec. 31st). There is a late fee of $100.00 if the Breeding Report is not on file with the Registry before the end of each year.

Certificate of Birth

A Certificate of Birth can be issued if either the sire or the dam of a horse are not approved by the Registry. The Certificate of Birth is not a Registration Paper, but it shows the complete pedigree (as far as known), the color and markings of the horse. Fillies with a Certificate of Birth will be eligible for the ISR Pre Mare Book at the age of three.

Letter of Parentage Verification (LOPV)

A Letter of Parentage Verification is a document that verifies the identity of sire and dam based on DNA testing. A LOPV is required for all yearlings and older horses as well as all foals bred with frozen semen prior to registration. Retrieve a DNA-form for the dam and a separate one for the foal from our website, complete them and send/email both forms to the registry’s office. Some time later you will get hair sample kits by email. Print them and then follow the instructions, pull hairs from mare and foal and mail the kits to UC Davis. The Registry will notify you by email about the result of the DNA-testing as soon as we receive it from UC Davis. This email attachment is your LOPV and must be brought to the inspection together with the Breeding Permit (see above).

Pedigree Paper

The Pedigree Paper will be issued for mares without any registration documents but with unconsolidated pedigree information and proof of parentage (letter of parentage verification). The Pedigree Paper then serves as proof of pedigree and complete pedigree information for the mare.

Registration

Registration is the procedure when a foal (or yearling or older offspring) is inspected and registered with one Breed Registry. Registration is possible at an inspection. If there is no inspection site close to you or you cannot attend an inspection you may also register a foal or offspring "by mail".
The registration document (paper) will be issued and mailed some time after the inspection.
Every horse can only be registered with one Breed Registry. A horse cannot change its breed after it has been registered.

Registration Paper

A Registration Paper is issued to all foals, yearlings and older horses which have been inspected and registered by ISR or by Oldenburg N.A..
A Registration Paper from any approved Registry is required for a mare to be approved for the Main Mare Book or the Mare Book and for a stallion to be presented at an inspection. The Registration Paper is also required to participate in the USDF All Breed Awards Program or for the WBFSH Young Horse World Championships. The Registration Paper determines the breed of a horse. If it is issued by ISR, the horse is an ISR bred horse, if it is issued by Oldenburg N.A., the horse’s breed is Oldenburg N.A.
Each horse can only have one registration paper issued by one Registry. Double registration is not accepted.
